Cádiz

Beaches, dunes, and salt marshes make up the Bay of Cádiz, a sunny natural park surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean where Cádiz is located. Its waters are cooler than those of the Mediterranean, making it a pleasure to stroll and swim in them.

Known as 'La Tacita de Plata', Cádiz is considered the oldest city in the West. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs settled in these lands, primarily for their access to the sea.

This city offers visitors a walk through its neighbourhoods steeped in history: the Old Town, where most of the monuments are located, the Barrio de la Viña, and the Barrio del Pópulo, of medieval origin.

Piedra Ostionera

At Villar Suites, the ostionera stone is present in both the common areas and inside our suites. This material has been restored to showcase it and so our guests can enjoy this symbol of the identity of the city of Cádiz.

The term 'ostionera stone' refers to a type of rock composed of various materials, including visible sandstones and fossilized remains of marine animals. Its name comes from the fact that ostreas (oysters) are the most abundant and visible depending on the cuts and quarries.

This type of stone, very characteristic of the coast of Cádiz and its Bay, is extracted from open-air quarries in areas near the coast.

Due to its high resistance to the elements, it has been commonly used in cathedrals, churches, palaces, and civil and military structures, the former being constructed almost entirely with this material. Even the defences and walls were built with ostionera stone.
